“If He”

If he were only to glance my way
He’d see all the wrinkles and the gray
That mark the times of all my tears
The many struggles, regrets and fears.
But if he were really to look at me
A girl of eighteen he’d have to see
With hair not of gray but velvety brown
And a body straight not bent nor bound.
And would my feelings truly come to be
If he were really to look at me
And would he know of all the bliss he brings
Whenever he bares his soul and sings.
And if my words he were to fully hear
Would he smile at all the joy the cheer
Might he welcome the teasing in my voice
If he knew he’d always been my choice.
And as I the schoolgirl await his kiss
Would he notice all my giddiness
Or my body trembling just at his sight
Or when dreams of him invade the night.
And if he were really to know my heart
Would these wrinkles he no longer chart
Might he perhaps realize this yearning
That’s just for him forever burning.
