In a
purple castle by the sea, the Pied Piper of Pop gathered his
fans for the final concert of the Jukebox Tour. The luxurious Borgata
Casino and Spa Events Center was sold out with 2,500 people for both of
the final two nights. Many more men were spotted here than in other
concerts.
Through his magical talent and southern charm, the crooner, Clay
Aiken, led the audience through a musical journey from the 1950s to the
future, via his forthcoming album.
He jokingly warned the audience that this final show may be
different, especially if the band leaves during intermission.
The jukebox on, Clay in black leather jacket and pants went from
the King to a Prince, from a Beatle to a Pip, and from a Choir Leader
to a Latin Lover. Each medley of a decade ended with a full
vocalization such as “Unchained Melody”, “Suspicious Minds”, his
stirring rendition of “Solitaire”, “Mandy”, his best-selling single,
“Bridge over Troubled Waters’, and ”Sailing”.
For the 1990s, the fans went loco over his La Vida. Shirt of
cherry red, hair the color of mocha. Whew. Throughout the show, Clay
shimmied, shook, wiggled, kicked, bumped and bounced, even though he
used to claim he was not a dancer. And the fans accompanied each
movement with delighted shrieks.
Clay showcased his talented back up singers. Jacob showed his
musical talent and sexy movements in “Rock with You” and “I Heard It On
the Grapevine.” As an extra treat, he added a mellow sax to many
numbers..
Angela went Motown with “Where did our love go”, and “Think”. We
think you’re fabulous, Angela. Later she purred “Black Velvet.”
When Quiana sang “I will always love you,” her eyes filled up with
tears at the audience’s response of standing up and cheering.
One aspect of the show was Clay picking a unwilling (?) man out
of the audience, supposed dragged to the concert by his Claymate wife
or girlfriend. The victim was taken backstage during the intermission
and dressed up in a black wig and costume to sing "Carwash" with Quiana
and Angela. He was given prizes and a story to tell the people back
home.
Mayhem broke out when his singers ganged up on Clay and sprayed him
with Silly String. “I got crap in my hair,” he complained. He also
admitted to a mindfart when forgetting a musician’s hometown. It was a
casual and easy going night with whipped cream in his shoes and Jacob’s
hat. Clay said he might auction the whipped cream on eBay. How much
whipped cream fills size 13 shoes?
One song Clay said he would not miss was "Love Me Tender" which he
accompanied himself on the piano having
just learned.
A new feature, added during the tour, was asking for song
suggestions from the audience for the bank to play. One was "Going to
Carolina in My Mind."
Clay sang a medley from MOAM and treated the audience with songs
from his future album, out next year. He sang the touching “When Tears
Run Dry” and the powerful “Back for More.” The audience sang along,
having recently learned the words from one of the many websites
dedicated to him. The singer, we call Our Man Clay (OMC) closed with
“Invisible” with all standing and singing at the top of their lungs.
The stage darkened. Colored streamers fell from the ceiling,
covering the fans who were shaking, smiling and crying. He’ll come
back for his Christmas tour and we’ll always come “Back For More”.
God bless you Clay and keep you safe.
